Curriculum Review: Olympics 2012, a Unit Study by Amanda Bennett

The Summer Olympics in London, England, begin July 27, 2012!

Are you excited?  Are your kids excited?  Want encourage that excitement and learn a lot about the Ancient and Modern Olympics as well as some really great science, history, geography, and art in the process?  Want to bring your family together for a fun learning adventure?

 Have I got a recommendation for you and your family:  Amanda Bennett (Unit Studies by Amanda Bennett) just released a brand new unit study entitled “Olympics 2012” along with a corresponding “Olympics 2012 Lapbook.”  The regular price on this downloadable PDF unit study is $10.95 (for 147 pages!), but if you grab it by 4/21/12 it’s only $8!  What a great deal!  But it actually gets better.  The corresponding Lapbook PDF file is FREE!  It doesn’t get better than that.

What’s in it for you and your family?  This 4-week unit study has daily plans and assignments already laid out for you at two different levels:  Lower Level for elementary grades and Upper Level for jr./sr. high grades (and even Mom and Dad).  All the research and planning is done; just add kids and curiosity.  So, here’s the solution to the “I’m bored” mantra of summer before it even begins.

Here’s the Daily Learning Plan breakdown:

·         “Today’s Quote” – to be read, copied, memorized, etc.

·         “Words of Wisdom (WOW)” – spelling/vocabulary words, along with a link to Webster’s 1828 Dictionary free online

·         “People and Places to Know” – the people and places you’ll learn about in your study adventure that day

·         “Read and Discover” – research questions and suggested places to find their answers.  There are lots of clickable links to websites as well as an extensive recommended book list for all ages.

Three things I especially like that will definitely build the excitement with your kids are (1) the book list, (2) links to Internet videos to begin each day’s study, and (3) family projects that will bring everyone together to share what they’ve learned throughout the study.

Imagine a relaxed summer day with your family excited about learning and researching all facets of the Olympics – both ancient and modern, all the countries involved, the various sports, the character qualities and human anatomy and physiology, nutrition and fitness necessary to be an Olympic athlete.  Your kids will be so excited.  They will learn more than you ever thought might be related to the Olympics.  And you get to relax and enjoy having everything all planned out for you.
